I don’t even know. It was my NOTP for the longest time. Like I did not get it. But I researched it, and then fell in love. I don’t know where it came from. I just fell in love.
This is quite long so I’m going to apologize ahead of time, but if you really want to know where CC came from originally then I may be able to help you out.
To get Clint Barton/Phil Coulson (also known as CC), you need to have some prior knowledge about both Clint and Phil in order to understand what makes this ship so darn appealing to writers… myself included. So basically (this is Earth-616 canon, btw):
Clint Barton - An ex-carnie with one of the more horrifying superhero origins out there. His abusive, drunk father, as well as his complicit mother, died in a car crash when he was a child (age is unclear, thought to be between 7-12), and he was sent to an orphanage with his brother, Barney Barton.
After 6 years pass with no adoption imminent, Barney decides to run away to the circus, and Clint follows him since Barney is, after all, his brother. There, they meet the Swordsman, who takes Clint (and not Barney - let’s see if you can guess where this is going) under his wing and teaches him how to fight.
Turns out that the Swordsman was embezzling from the circus. Clint catches him in the act, refuses to join him, and has both his legs broken in direct result. When he wakes up in hospital, Barney - who has become increasingly jealous as Clint gets more and more attention from the Swordsman - visits him, and tells him in pretty much no uncertain terms that yup, that there with the Swordsman? That was all Clint’s fault.
If you’ve been keeping count, we’ve got 4 people that Clint trusted - and in some cases loved - who have turned their backs on him and abandoned him.
Clint gets found in the hospital by a man going by the name of Trickshot, who teaches him trick fighting and trick shooting and how to take care of himself in the “real world”. Trickshot begins taking Clint with him into the field, telling him that they’re operating on the side of justice when in reality both Trickshot and now Clint are rogue mercenaries. Clint finds this out when he injures Barney (now an FBI agent, because logic?), and, again, refuses to participate in crime and is shot and left for dead by Trickshot.
So our final tally stands at 5. Clint has trusted 5 people along the course of his life, and each and every one of them has betrayed the faith placed in them: his mother (1), by remaining complicit as his father (2) abused him, Barney (3) blaming him for the Swordsman (4), and now, Trickshot (5).
And in direct opposition to Clint’s life of pain, Phil Coulson is… a blank slate. As a writer, let me tell you that Phil Coulson is incredible to work with because you can do literally anything you want with his backstory and there really isn’t much that goes against canon. Because there isn’t canon.
So Marvel takes Clint, who’s chock-full of issues and sadness, and Phil, who’s this unknown variable, and sticks them together in pouring rain in Thor (2011). And the audience is sitting there, watching them interact - and almost flirt - with each other.
That, right there? That’s where CC comes from.
That and the amazing writers, artists and community.
This is so perfect. I couldn’t put it into words, but thank you! Seriously. It is an amazing ship.
The best ship I’d ever have.
